Best & Brightest on display

Although this incident took place nearly a year ago, the pictures are just now making the rounds in social media.  The website, Big League Politics, posted photos of  graffiti of the uncouth variety that was painted in the Christian Center.  Millsaps students painted the graffiti at the encouragement of a professor or two and proudly stood by their work:

The graffiti was painted over during the renovations that took place last year. See more photos at Big League Politics.  The website also reported more on the story and included a statement from Millsaps College.

Kingfish note: I assumed "Christian Center" meant something religious but readers have informed me that it is the name of the building and has no religious connotations.  I'll take the hit for that one.

Dude, other articles on that site talk about a second shooter in Florida. It's hard to give a lot of credibility to this.

Is Millsaps a sanctuary college for seriously obese co-eds?

Burke said...

Rude, crude and stupid. Must be college kids. (See today's "Zits" comic strip.)

Not to excuse the crudity, but this "Big League Politics" website got a little too excited about the chance to expose "vandalism" of a "Christian center." You can't vandalize a building that will be completely renovated.

Christian Center is not a religious student center, but rather an academic building, with classes and professors' offices. It's been closed for a long time for renovations.

Anonymous said...

Not one of the students in those pictures will amount to anything.

I'm saying this as an alum, but Millsaps should be ashamed. I saw someone on Facebook defending it as an assignment and that makes it worse. Millsaps is a place of high learning. Professors giving first grade assignments of "expressing yourself" should be fired for that, regardless of the political viewpoints expressed.

They painted graffiti on a wall in a building that was about to undergo a total renovation. I'm shocked. Not. People offended by this are pathetic little snowflakes.

You missed the ENTIRE point, Pathetic at 12:04. It's not about paint and renovations. It is about content, and that the thoughts were encouraged by staff. There was at least one peaceful soul amongst them, quoting the Dalai Lama.
KF, would love to know the intent of the original naming of the "Christian" Center.

The older gentleman in the lower left of the first photo is Professor James E. Bowley, chairman of the Religious Studies Department. Was this some sort of assignment for his class? If you enlarge the second photo, you can see a very vulgar comment directed at Gov. Phil Bryant.

You progressives that are saying "Christian Center" is not Christian but an academic building to make this less heinous are ridiculous. The building HAS A STEEPLE. A staple of church and Christianity.

Weekly chapel services are held there.

It is true that the building also hosts some academic departments, but to say its not a Christian building is a lie.

I enlarged each photo knowing that I would spot weed, black nail polish and dildos. The professor must had all that in a paper bag.

12:38, connection to any organized religion or not...the comments were vapid, vulgar, and inane.

And, 12:04, saying so doesn't mean I'm offended, it means I shudder to think these mouth breathers might possibly be a fellow alum someday. The only offense I took was at you using 'not.' May Wayne's World have mercy on your soul.

Anonymous said...

It's true that the building was about to undergo renovation, but to see these classrooms defiled with vulgar graffiti, and the grinning perpetrators of the vandalism proudly posed in front of their work is beyond sickening. I spent many a happy hour in that building as an undergraduate in the 1970's, and the professors we had back then would never have countenanced something like this.
This is a black day for Millsaps.

I get calls twice a year from Millsaps asking for donations, and I just sent my most recent check in last week. I have half a mind to stop payment. I'm an alumnus and have given for years, but I refuse to subsidize this.

And yes, the Christian Center is an academic building. It is no more a religious edifice than Murrah or Sullivan-Harrell. When I was there it was primarily a center for the arts, like plays and concerts. It's not a church.

Regardless, if the faculty is encouraging this behavior, I need to rethink my donation.

This is not satirical graffiti - it is nothing less than hate being promoted by certain members of the Millsaps faculty.

The professor is an embarrassment for sure, but bad behavior by college kids is hardly news. Or maybe everybody here who is indignant graduated from BYU. I've heard plenty of stories from friends who went to college around the state, and this stuff is mild by comparison.

People, get a life. As for the prof, he might get in the same line.

Louis LeFleur said...

As a Millsaps alumn (twice), this neither surprises nor upsets me. For those other Millsaps alums on here who don't seem to know it, the Christian Center also houses the campus chapel, not that it's used much anymore. There hasn't been mandatory chapel at Millsaps since before I started there in 1972. The last time I was in the chapel was probably a good 15 years ago for a memorial service for a former staff member (not faculty).

Anonymous said...

Some of you may think this is no big deal, or find it amusing, but this is a beloved campus building and many alums, from the 1950's onward, have happy memories of it and find this kind of behavior by current students hurtful and deeply disturbing. That this defacement was abetted by members of the faculty is truly disheartening.

As a Millsaps graduate, I am embarrassed by this sophomoric graffiti, but especially distressed to see the hate promoted by these professors. This is sick stuff. I assume the’ve Been fired and the students suspended.

Prof Bowley is a (physically) mature male surrounded by teen girlies. That he chose to encourage them to draw sexual pix, use profane and sexual language, and indulge in this artless little project makes me wonder. Maybe I have a dirty mind, but in my world grown men who encourage teens into sexually questionable situations are often doing it for reasons other than intellectual stimulation. I find his actions not only tasteless and pointless, but extremely inappropriate in terms of building strong identities for female students. Were I the mother of one of these girls I would be asking questions. And I doubt Prof Bowley would have the answers I'd be looking for. My next stop would be asking Millsaps to investigate both his past & his future.

I'm just not shocked. It's Millsaps. It's as a left a place of education as any. You've got people like Robert McElvaine indoctrinating folks. It's a petri dish of socialism, community activism, and upperclass spoiled kids.
It's not really a Christian school and I'm shocked they haven't changed their name considering how outraged they'd pretend to be if they knew who their namesake was.

It's time that Millsaps got its crap together. It's not living up to its potential. I have no idea how Bowley is still at Millsaps or ever was in the first place. It baffles me to think that he gets to work on the same campus as Katz, Pelch, Story, Page, etc. Bowley's resume doesn't even really stack up when you compare it to the majority of the faculty, yet he won professor of the year the same academic year he was on the Ashley Madison list.

It appears while looking at the pictures that Bowley is creeping on the co-eds that don't get any attention from the male students. You would think most male teachers/professors would be scared to spend that much time around female students unless they were the coach of a girls athletic team.

To think Robert Robbins, a Millsaps grad, that is now the president of University of Arizona apparently got passed up for Pearigen?

Dear Millsaps,

Get rid of Bowley.

Lower the price it cost to stay in the dorms!

Go back to the hands off approach when it came to the frat houses.

Maybe add a graduate program or two.

Thank me later,

You know, the AD that ran students off from drinking at sporting events and then caused the college to look like a suit case school which caused Millsaps to hire five enrollment specialist to try and figure out what the problem was?

Has anyone been on campus recently --that building has been completely gutted. The rooms that were "decorated" by the students aren't even there anymore, basically all that's left is the brick exterior. Would you let your 5 year old draw on a wall you were about to repaint? I would. How is this any different?

Also, some of those long-haired young people are guys. Not everyone with lovely locks is a lady. We could ask them how they get such wonderful curls, but they obviously don't know about this blog. Is that the best hairstyle for them, probably not, but we've already seen that they might not make the best life choices.

Did the trick.

I am an alumnus of Millsaps and, upon seeing this article, called the office of Alumni Relations. I did this because I care about my alma mater, and despite what smug naysayers like Burke post, it IS a big deal. If that same batch of misbehaving college kids had covered the walls with racial slurs, you can bet that no one would be dismissing it as harmless while suggesting that those offended should "get a life".

I have a life, and my Millsaps years are an essential part of that life, so when a group of students are led by faculty to deface college property with obscene and vulgar graffiti, it offends me. It particularly concerns me when representatives of the college called me two weeks ago begging for money - a request which I granted. As such, I called and spoke with my contact there.

Let me say that she has heard an earful from a number of concerned alumni over the past few days and she is equally offended by this. We had a very pleasant conversation, but I made certain that she understood the gravity of this. Believe me, she and the administration understand. It's a big deal to them as well.

She indicated that the administration is preparing a statement regarding this incident and the reaction to it, and alumni will be notified as to their response. I told her that if the leadership of Millsaps submits a wishy-washy non-response, I will remember it the next time they call for donations. She assured me it would not be so.

I realize that these people do not represent Millsaps, but the hard truth is that currently they do, and as such it is on the administration's shoulders to quash that perception and present what is really happening by the people who really do represent Millsaps.

We shall see how they respond.

This is a big deal. It is my understanding from people currently on campus that at least one of the "painters" has openly stated that the school did NOT discipline them at all. There are currently facebook posts from those involved threatening the "snitch." If those words or depictions were drawn on say a woman's door room would it have the same reaction. Political discourse is vital, and a backbone of Millsaps. However, crude sexual depictions and profanities is not political discourse. If that is the best dialogue that these "best and brightest" can form then this is not the school I attended.
This situation has gotten out of hand, and the administration has lost control of its teachers and student body. The McRae Foundation should revoke its multi-million dollar contribution to renovate the Christian Center and leave the school with the mess they created. The school will get not one more penny from me until the professor is no longer employed there.

Thanks for that Reed.
Questions I've seen answered both ways:
- Is the Christian Center named after Christ or is it for some donor with a surname of Christian?
- Is it a place of worship/ considered a spiritual center on campus?
- Were these students of Millsaps pictured who did this?

What are the chances we'll see:
- a real punishment for that little creepy hippie prof?
- a formal apology to at least our guv?

The Millsaps Christian Center was originally constructed as a memorial honoring former students & grads who died in service in WWII. Built in 1950, it had a bronze plaque in the foyer of the building, lists names of those who, according to the plaque, "made the supreme sacrifice" for America. We can hope that Prof Bowley merely had his vandal crew scratch out these names rather than painting obscenities over them. At one time the Christian Center housed Fitzhugh Memorial Chapel & there were memorial & special services held there from time to time. But ya know - no need to respect sacred areas. The Millsaps Multi-Faith Initiative & Ecumenical group also used this area for meetings along with other campus ministry groups. But perhaps they like vagina drawings and FUs?

I’m not Reed, but I graduated from Millsaps a decade earlier. The Christian Center housed an auditorium where chapel was held weekly. It was the building that also housed the religion and philosophy departments. It was home to the Millsaps Players and theater department. Millsaps students and two professors are in the pictures. Yes, they were the graffiti artists/vandals. There will be no significant punishment for the profs. They should be fired, but won’t be. The president of Millsaps will make a half-hearted apology to the governor and the president. Alums are furious and the funds will dry up, but college administrators are cowards and afraid to do what’s right. After all a religion professor who teaches hate might have his feelings hurt.

I was a student at Millsaps from 1961-63, and returned there to teach English from 1969-84. I attended compulsory chapel in the CC (except for the time I cut chapel with some friends and went to the Olde Tyme and had a bottle of dark German beer). I taught dozens of classes in the CC. It needed renovations back then, and I was happy to hear that the renovation was going to occur. I am in full support of Pres. Pearigen, who must deal with financial stresses as all presidents of Millsaps have before him, and I'm sure such stresses will continue to the end of time. I love Millsaps College, always have and always will.

What strikes me about this incident and many similar incidents around the country is that they are in large part the consequence of the 2016 presidential election between two of the worst candidates in our history. I can only hope that we are reaching the point where the polarization of right and left will begin to subside and politics will become, not civil but at least less uncivil. Until the tide turns, and I'm optimistic that it will, we are going to have to endure the gross behavior that is occurring at the extremes of left and right. "The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity." W. B. Yeats wrote that a long time ago; sadly it continues to be pertinent.

When I first walked into the Christian Center, I noted that it smelled just like the interiors of all the Methodist Churches I grew up in, from Iowa to Mississippi. The odor of piety? Now I'm waiting to see what it will smell like when it reopens to other generations. Millsaps is one of our state's great institutions. It will not only survive, it will prevail. (Now, where did I read that?)

I was at Millsaps in the 1980s. At that time, the Christian Center housed some faculty offices and classrooms. The center of it was an auditorium where concerts and plays were held. Millsaps Players performed there twice a semester and the Singers would hold concerts as well. Despite its name, it was not really used as a center of worship. Chapel was there, but few students availed themselves of it, to my knowledge. I don't know the origin of the name, but I don't believe it was named after a person named Christian.

These were students and some faculty according to the person with whom I spoke. I have no idea what the college will do to the students or to the professor, but I wouldn't count on an apology to the governor. More than likely we will see a statement of regret and disavowal. My hope is that it is more than just a, "tsk tsk, don't do it again!" I guess we'll see in the next day or two.

Was our president drawing a salary for teaching college students when he made his tasteless comments? Was he accompanied by a group of those college students under his supervision? I have 2 children in college. I would be very upset if they were influenced to do this by a professor at the school where they attend. This kind of junk can be taught on the streets of Jackson instead of in an academic environment where I pay over $1,000 per hour for them to attend. It is a shame this is condoned as acceptable behavior. While students may act out as they mature into adulthood, I cannot approve of the faculty's conduct in promoting this filth.

A bronze plaque in the foyer of the building, erected in 1950, lists the names of those who, according to the plaque, "made the supreme sacrifice" for our country.

In addition to this historical distinction, the Christian Center houses the Fitzhugh Memorial Chapel, where weekly and special memorial services are held. The Millsaps Multi-Faith Initiative and Millsaps Ecumenical Community often reserve the chapel for meetings or special speakers, and other campus ministry groups host services there as well.

The Christian Center is also home to the theatre, religious studies, philosophy, history, and classical studies departments."

How any professor or adult (which some consider college students to be) who participated in this is beyond an explanation

"In the past few days, additional information has come to light, including photographs that were, I believe, not known to those conducting the investigations last spring. In addition to identifying individuals involved, the photographs reveal that the graffiti on the walls of the Christian Center expanded and became more vulgar and demeaning over the course of several days. Some of the individuals in the early photographs were, I’m told, not involved or aware of the progressively shameful words and depictions painted on the walls of the building."

Honestly, this is the epitome of inflammatory journalism with no basis in fact. How do we know that the students in the photos were involved in the painting? As a recent graduate, I know that the Christian center lounge (room with the eggs painted) was used as a community space for a number of groups, many of which continued to meet there in the days following the incident. Who’s to say these photos weren’t taken to commemorate year-end meetings/ last meetings in the christian center before it was gutted?

Awoke this morning thinking about 'safe spaces.' It appears Millsaps has made a decision to instead provide 'unsafe spaces' - for conservatives. I can only imagine what a student, already in the political minority, feels walking into, or past, or even near a revered old campus bldg knowing that inside his fellow-students have painted and scrawled their hatred. And doubling that feeling is knowledge such actions were supported by and giggled over by a respected professor. That is the very means of intimidation all 'mouth-breathers' use to stifle thoughts they don't like. Millsaps, by allowing a professor who was involved in such a thing to remain, sent a clear message that it was no big deal. Perhaps administrators do think it's a sign of being an 'elite school.' If a school wants only one train of political thought running through it a good way to insure that is to allow filthy abuse of the 'other side' - regardless of which side. We conservatives naturally think if Obama insults had been painted it would have been cleaned up promptly and action for 'racism' taken. Or perhaps it was just a busy April and no one had time to find a solution. Hopefully, for all the fuss now a solution will be found. Otherwise I cannot imagine sending a child to a school where their developing thoughts on politics will be squashed and stomped on by a bunch of laughing professors who enjoy making graffiti statements with the girls. Let those who think this is okay display their indifference. We know college kids aren't so delicate these days. But is it the hope of a school like Millsaps that they can produce crasser, cruder, and nastier adults - or are they actually trying to elevate society. I believe their actions in solving this will tell us.

Parents are now voting with their checkbook. If small schools like Milsaps want to survive, they better start proving the education and experience they provide are worth your hard earned dollars. Look what happened to Mizzou after the "we need some muscle over here" fiasco. Enrollment dropped 35%. If Milsaps doesn't think that can happen to them, they are living in the dark ages. Parents aren't going to stand for it. Maybe liberal parents whose students received some nice grants or scholarships will but conservatives, even those with scholarships, won't want their children in that environment, regardless of the education offered.

I have had a number of grim views myself, but they passed. Personally, I figure that if I could go on living and caring about things after the events of 1968, then I will be all right for the few years I have left. We have always had crisis politics in the U. S. First the crisis, then our best selves come out from wherever they have gone. And yes, those best selves soon go glimmering away to come again another day. Let's hope for a "return to normalcy," but with someone a tad better than Warren Gamaliel Harding.

As for you, "Jim M," it pleases me no end to find out that I helped a fellow American impress a member of the opposite sex. And thank you for your kind remarks. You know, we could use a few more kind remarks here in Kingfish land.

Douche bags. That is all that comes to mind.

The supporters of this mess are entirely disingenuous. In remembrance of an earlier post, if the graffiti writers had painted "F--- Hillary" and "Screw Obama" not only would these people be outraged, CNN and MSNBC would be all over campus and the WaPost and NY Times would be demanding reactions from the White House.

I too am a not so proud graduate of Millsaps in the 90's. I'm fine with kids being kids and painting graffiti (which is rarely ever tasteful because what would be the point of doing that).

I do think Millsaps should fire any faculty involved in this because, as faculty, they should be held to a higher standard of leadership. I personally do not like or agree with a lot of the graffiti that I could make out, but I'm not too worked up over it in a building set for demolition.

Millsaps quit getting any of my money a few years back when they decided to close the Computer Science department and stop offering degrees in it. The reason, I was told, was that the salaries for CS professors were higher than those in other departments. Yeah, guess what, that's probably because CS is in demand and those professors can get a better paying job somewhere if they need to. Not to worry though, Millsaps does still offer a Classical Studies Major with a concentration in Latin or biblical languages or you can Major in Spanish, so at least Keifer's will not have to worry about running out of Millsaps grads to wait tables any time soon.

According to Millsaps' own website, it now costs $56K a year for an undergrad, so the people in those photos should have their quarter million dollar educations paid off in just five or six life times. That seems like a great plan. Way to go Mudflaps.

Students were not punished. Admitted by the Dean during a meeting because the person who was originally tasked with handling the original situation is not longer with the College.

If the administration did not know the extent of the vandalism, why did Maintenance spend three days painting over it before the Board toured the building for the last time?

Why is a professor who dropped the f-bomb during a speach to incoming freshmen with a powerpoint backdrop of penis and vagania still the chair of the religion department?

Why did the same professor buy the paint used in the assigned exercise for students to express themselves?

Oh, buy the way, there are four Millsaps professors in the pictures.

And no, this is not gossip or hearsay. People need to investigate further. And no, don't ask a staff member about this. If we speak out, we are in fear of our jobs. After all, we don't have tenure.

All of the money that is being taken back from donations should go towards the student loans for whoever was brave enough to get this story out. He’s probably got a HUGE target on his back

to the poster above saying Millsaps is elite--average entering ACT score is 25-with about 700 students. Mississippi College has a 24 and has 5000 students. Is MC an 'elite' school also? costs half as much...

elite is Vanderbilt. entering average ACT 34. 12k students.

Make the stupid profs turn in their hush puppies on the way out. The way the school has mishandled the entire "investigation" is embarrassing. This will hurt the school in the only way it is honestly concerned about, i.e., money. Rhodes and Sewanee traditionally look down on Millsaps for a reason. Quite a concentration of unattractive girls, too. The issue is the profs encouraging the activity, not the building.

As a geriatric alumnus, I am in disbelief that this could have happened at Millsaps College. I am sure Homer Ellis Finger is rolling over in his grave. The college obviously needs a change in leadership. Change is clearly needed in the religion program (and no, do not wait until the end of the semester). Dr. Bowley may be very intelligent, but he appears to be seriously lacking in judgement and character. Change is also needed at the top. Instead of dealing with this in a timely and appropriate fashion, the president tried to cover it up. He is also less than candid when he says he did not see all of the writing on the wall. Perhaps there will be some future writing on the wall that he will have to attend to. I am meeting with my attorney tomorrow to change my will. I no longer want my name associated with this institution

These professors don't wear Hush Puppies, they wear sandals. And actually, the majority of Millsaps undergraduate women are quite good looking, and always have been. I know it's not reflected in those photographs, but there it is.

I also will never forget.... standing near the Student Union when Dan Hise told me my paper was “beautiful.” God bless Dan Hise, indeed.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
