Washington **** on Cochran & Herring pork

The Washington **** reported on the little government program that could.... keep going and going and going as President Obama, Republicans, and Democrats have tried to kill funding for the Columbus Foundation. Unfortunately for the would-be budget cutters, Senator Cochran saved the program each time. Mississippi GOP elder Jim Herring served as on the foundation's board of directors as Vice-Chairman until recently. The newspaper reported:

"It took up just three lines in Congress’s last big appropriations bill, on Page 123 out of 487. But it is a legend, a wonk’s campfire story — the government spending nobody could kill.

“For payment to the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation . . . $450,000, to remain available until expended.”

This is a great survivor in the vast ecosystem of federal funding: a 20-year-old program that gives cash prizes for work in science. President Obama has called it inefficient and redundant. He and House Republicans — who agree on almost nothing — have tried to eliminate it.

Each time, however, it has been saved by a powerful friend in the Senate, Thad Cochran, the senior senator from Mississippi.

Now, Washington is enmeshed in another battle over spending. But the Columbus foundation shows how both parties are struggling to turn their hard-nosed rhetoric about austerity into action. After all, it would be hard to imagine a less painful cut than this one: a program with two full-time employees and bipartisan enemies....

All along, as Obama and these Republicans were making a show of trying to cut the foundation, another Republican, Cochran, was doing the quiet work necessary to keep it going.

On the Hill, aides said Cochran has repeatedly requested funding from Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), who oversees appropriations for small government agencies.....

Now, the next round. On March 27, all government funding, including for the Columbus foundation, will run out. Republicans have called for new, deeper spending cuts.

Could the foundation be in danger again?

It has been headquartered in the Finger Lakes region of New York since 2000, when its executive director, Judith M. Shellenberger, a former Annunzio aide who makes $106,000 a year, moved the office from Northern Virginia to her home town, Auburn.

“We have a vast amount of support in both the House and Senate,” Shellenberger said. Asked to name some of those supporters, she replied: “I can’t think of anybody at this moment that I would point to . . . but definitely Senator Cochran has been a supporter

Herring and Cochran are both reconstructed Democrats. Mounger flipped Cochran who has remained an addict. When Herring ran for Gov. in 1979 he wanted to take the sales tax off groceries, but Charlie Deaton said the measure would cripple the state revenues. Democrats got better at math, but the converted Republicans continue to need rehab.

Like too many similar organizations in Jackustan the foundation is nothing more than an employment agency (see pg 8).

Daily operations of the Foundation are handled by a two-person staff--the Executive Director and Staff Assistant.

Should be Page 8 here.

It doesn't get any funnier than Hilary Clinton complaining about the inadequacy of the State Department budget in light of the inconvenient fact that the United States Senate hasn't passed a budget in four years.

8:54 you are right about the US Senate's poor record on governance and it is as weighty as the House use of the debt ceiling as a political tool, in the credit market instability. The tea party faction spoke yesterday about their leadership's promises on establishing fiscal discipline in return for their votes today in the (3) month extension. The newbies were split on supporting the Speaker's measure to kick the can.

The tea party harpy is back!

Mississippi voters are the ultimate "paradox", the ultimate irony: most claim to be fiscal conservative Republicans, wanting smaller government, less spending, balanced budgets, lower and lower taxes, term limits. Then, poll them and find out that one of the biggest spenders, government program and agency funders, earmarkers, pork-adding promoters, is the most popular politician in their state, unbeatable in an election, Mr. Thad Cochran, who by now must be serving his 20th term in the US Senate.

Cochran has always been Senator Spender. You can't teach old dogs new tricks. And the only connection to Mississippi is Jim Herring, who just won't go away. Cronyism at its best. Thanks, Senator!

Cochran possesses the sublime wisdom that all MS politicians should have, which is that Mississippians say they're for fiscal conservatism, but the reality is that our state only survives by suckling at the Federal Government's teat (which is essentially other blue states). Oh well.

State Senator Chris McDaniel for U.S. States Senator! It's time for Cochran to go. We need fresh, young, fiscally conservative blood in DC!

I'm so tired of thoughtless attacts on Senator Cochran. Thad has served tirelessly to better our state. His philosophy has always been that if earmarks are the rule, then he is going to use them to benefit MS. I don't see why, if this is the way the appropriations process has historically operated, MS as the poorest state in the union shouldn't benefit from it. There are many worthwhile earmarks that have benefitted MS, the country and specifically research and answers to many problems. Especially in agriculture. There are many attackers who have no idea what they are talking about, they just don't know the true facts.

I think Senator Cochran is for a balanced budget but he hasn't wanted Mississippi to have a disadvantage with the practice of earmarks. If he can't change the system, then he wants MS to benefit from it. Would we rather the money go to NY?

10:25 PM -- The money IS going to New York. Anyway you slice it this is bacon (pork) to stroke Jim Herring. And by the way, I was a volunteer in Thad's original run for the House of Representatives. The nation is broke. That "earmark" was money we borrowed from China. And 10:25, don't give me that "good ole Thad" crap. It's time for some fiscal sanity.

Cochran's a Republican??? Had ME fooled.

Wonder who all Ms Shellenberger " knows" in the Biblical sense or who would have to be supporting her financially were it not for Congressional help?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
