Sewage on Sheffield

A Northsider who lives on Sheffield sent me this video of raw sewage flooding Sheffield Drive this morning and an accompanying post.

For several years the 1400-1500 block of Sheffield (in between Ridgewood and Old Canton) has had severe flooding problems every time it rains, due to a collapsed storm water sewage pipe. About a month ago two large sink holes appeared in the street and it was partially closed. This was a result of the 24" black-water sewage pipe collapsing, and the underground pumping station broke 2 weeks later (last Monday.) Rather than fixing the 24" pipe, the city obtained permission from an area resident to divert the sewage by way of a very large, very loud pumping unit to a 6" pipe though her back yard. This pipe not only serves the residential area, but also serves all of the commercial area to the west of Old Canton as well (Kroger, etc.) It is not large enough to solve the problem. This morning during the heavy rain, the pipes connected to the pump broke and spewed raw sewage into the streets that mixed with the rainwater, which also could not drain due to the collapsed storm pipes. This is the video you see now. Not only is this a health hazard for the street's resident's, but Wee World Pre-School is also on the 1500 block of Sheffield, directly across Ridgewood from the Jackson Academy Elementary School.

City Councilman Quentin Whitwell was quick to get help, and according to State Senator Will Longwitz facebook update the city has cleaned the mess, fixed the pipe, and DEQ has been on the scene to monitor and spray disinfectant.

The problem of course is this is a "temporary" fix to a major infrastructure problem, and this could likely happen every time the area receives a decent rainfall. The city cannot provide any timeline for fixing the problem, and as we know from a similar situation in Fondren, the city took two years to fix the issue.

glad I dont live on Sheffield...speed bumps and all!

This is on the section closer to the Post Office.....no speed bumps. However, if you run over a lump on this section of Sheffield, don't slow down to see what it was. You don't want to know what it was.

In other Jackson news today, the C-L reports the Stokes power pair are trying to redraw the ward boundaries to add another black person to the City Council, removing a white one solely because of their complexion.

Thank goodness the two people you mentioned acted quickly to get the city to fix this public health catastrophe. We'll miss them and their results. Too bad they are the wrong color for Jackson/Hinds government.

If seeing your street full of raw human waste isn't a strong enough argument for getting the hell out of Jackson, I don't know what is.
Who wants to raise a family in those conditions? You know it's going to happen again.

3:32, you are correct.....the wrong color and....way too smart. Kenneth Stokes is the biggest dumb ass I have heard speak in my entire life!

Nothing that a rebranding campaign can't gloss over.

Tell you what. If the rebranding campaign doesn't work let's spend $100 million dollars in long term debt on a convention center hotel and then throw a Hail Mary with another $150 million debt dollars for a new downtown arena.

Until we can get the daiquiri bars revved up we can't fleece the tourists. And if we can't fleece the tourists then we can't fix the collapsing sewer lines.

Anonymous said...

Looks like it is time for a new public-private partnership with David Watkins. He does infrastructure. Right?

Anonymous said...

Nothing dumb about Stokes; he is willing.

Let me add that my family just started renting a house on this side of Sheffield and it has been nothing but hell. I am a life-long Jackson resident and have live on the other side of Sheffield a good part of my life. The incompetence of the City of Jackson is nothing short of outrageous. They tell us that it may be 5-6 months before the very loud pump is removed. Who knows when they'll fix the sinkholes.

Anonymous said...

If you are renting I'd leave as soon as you can pack the truck. It won't be 5-6 months. Ask the folks in Fondren.

Anonymous said...

They should pump that sewage on Sheffield in a tanker truck then pump it into into city hall so those buffoons wearing stupid looking hats can enjoy the essence of poo while they preen and posture "leading" the bold new city...

WJTV: Watkins Diverted Tax Dollars

More new revelations in our ongoing I-team investigation into Jackson developer David Watkins and his role in the metrocenter mall project.

We’ve learned tax dollars intended for the renovation of the old Belk building were diverted to another Watkins company.

@3:32, the map you reference proposes to re-draw Ward 7 to make it 70+ percent black. Ward 7 is currently represented by Margaret Barrett Simon, a white democrat senior citizen who refuses to show up for work. She skips the meetings she is being paid to attend, to go to meetings for a meaningless volunteer state committee she sits on.

When Ms. Barrett-Simon actually troubles herself to attend a city council meeting, she contributes nothing and generally sits there like a deer in the headlights.

Margaret Barrett-Simon has treated her paid job on the city council as little more than a status job that gets her attagirls in her haughty social circle. She is ineffective, too old and has been on the city council too damn long.

Therefore, I say gerrymander her butt straight into the retirement home. I bet her black replacement will actually show up for meetings.

Raw sewage spewing into the streets of Mississippi's "Capital City ".

Why is anyone surprised ?

The cliche "not if-but when" is so true for this (City with Soul) .

In retrospect, the old days of Dale Danks sporting that year round' tan , chain smoking Kent 100's,
and going through two cans of Men's consort hair spray per day ... don't look so bad.

Jackson in the 1970's & 80's was pretty good.

Anonymous said...

Curt, don't disagree with your assessment, but there are other optinos than this gerrymandering plan of the Stokes's.

Lets make the ward a reasonable "swing ward" and get someone to run that will attend to business yet maintain a balance on the council. I think MBS has been there long enough and her attitude towards the position the last year has shown that it is time to replace her.

Doesn't have to be another Stokes or a Stokes light. But if it goes to the 70% BVAP, that's what we will get.

Crowley has a problem with seniors. Here's a newsflash, Crowley. What counts at these circus meetings is how they vote on the issues that come before the council, not how much they preen and mouth off and pander to the camera.

This is just another example of why I moved away. It seems that Mississippi shows absolutely zero effort for any concern about a clean environment or conservation (and I don't mean just for hunting and fishing but overall ecology). I grew up on that street and have many fond memories of my childhood there. Yet, I do remember sewage seeping into and out of Hanging Moss creek often after big rains, and I mean extreme amounts of sh*t and anything else to give you some sort of disease like hepatitis or worse. It's sad to see that nothing has really changed. I go back to visit MS every year, and through the years I've yet to see any significantly large movements to support environmental quality or improvement. Sure, there are some folks advocating for a clean environment and conservation to some extent, but nothing like many other places in the US. For the small efforts that are there and trying, "keep rockin' folks; I pray you'll be heard someday". It'd just be great to see Mississippi catch up with the rest of the country in the "green" efforts and concern for public health and quality of life. I sure as hell don't want to raise any children where they have to play in sh*t or other hazardous "trash" that may be around (and no one cares about it). I wouldn't be surprised if these words may piss off some folks in MS, but sorry y'all, nothing personal. It's just time to stop looking like the ignorant state of the country. And yes, that is how many Americans in other areas view MS. I'm tired of having to defend the state I was born in when mentioned to folks in other places. Still I will say that I love the people of Jackson and around the state, but as for living there, f**k Mississippi.

So the sewage everyone is complaining about has existed for years?

If the sewage existed then the "shock" of "sewage flowing into the streets" is hyperbole.

Posters and readers on this blog, put your iphone down and look in the mirror. Are you really appalled by pre existing sewage or are you appalled that your town has a different complexion?

Jackson does have hard times ahead but it will survive...it just wont be run by anyone you know or anyone who cares about you...because quite simply...you never cared about them.

You reap what you sew.

It isn't about race August 18, 2012 8:39 AM jerkoff.

It is about the governing bodies and elected officials performing the basics well and staying focused on priorities.

Crime, infrastructure and schools. Fix those three problems and Jackson has a chance to survive. But the clock is ticking and the hole only gets deeper with each passing day.

Race-baiting and scapegoating won't get it done. The city would be better off without idiots like you around.

Harvey runs an employment office from his desk. Pure and simple. Race notwithstanding. He could care less about yutes popping caps and offing each other or how many cop cars are in the University Hospital entrance drive or which businesses are shackled in plywood or how deep the potholes are. One thing matters and that is the path that leads from giving his friends jobs to a forever PERS monthly check for each of them.

8:24, do you dispute the fact that Margaret Barrett Simon refuses to attend regularly scheduled council meetings? Do you dispute the fact that she misses these meetings intentionally, opting instead to go to some do-nothing volunteer state committee she was appointed to (that has absolutely nothing to do with city government)? Do you dispute the fact that she receives a paycheck from the City that encompasses attending these council meetings, and then does not attend?

I hope you don't dispute these facts, seeing as how Margaret Barrett Simon admitted these things to the Clarion-Ledger.

Why are you defending a council member who is so secure in her incumbency that she doesn't think it's a problem that she is AWOL?

I suppose at some point just not giving a s--t and phoning it in became acceptable.

Race baiting? Idiot?

You ignored the first request...look in the mirror.

Blacks were excluded at every turn by white people. Those same black people did not just vanish. They live in Jackson. They remember. Some of them even learned how to race bait and divide. Stokes learned at the feet of the masters. Stokes hates white people and makes no bones about it. Just like past white leaders in the past hated blacks. (If this is even debateable in your mind, quit reading).

Jackson will exist and the known current tax base will leave...another tax base will replace it...just no one who has kids your kids go to school with, noone you go to church with, and noone you would consider living next to.

If you think Im wrong about the above after you candidly look in the mirror at your life, then you are either an abject liar, completely without reason, or the only white guy who attends Redeemer Church.

The leadership of Jackson, Hinds County is piss poor and has been piss poor for a long time. That is why it continually spirals down in productivity. Build all you want but if you can't pipe the human waste away what do you have-and don't have funds to correct it-and this could have happened anywhere in the city. Makes me sick to think I grew up there but it was good years with good leadership. For those who say I am being racial my black friends can't get out of Jackson fast enough and tell me they are welcome in Rankin and Madison county. Why would anyone in their right mind want to live in Jackson?

Anonymous said...

@ 10:47

If you think there is a "another tax base" moving into Jackson "to take the place" of the old tax base, you're out of your mind.

There will be no "new" tax base. Once the current tax base wises up and leaves, Jackson is toast.

Eventually, state government will be forced to abandon the city for safety reasons.

Then we will see if the remaining fools will figure out how to develop malls, hospitals, and shopping centers.

You don't see that in any rotting city run by Democrats.

There isn't going to be any replacement tax base coming to the rescue.

Jackson will finally be theirs but all of Jackson's problems will still be laid at your feet.

Do you really think eastover and the surrounding area will be taken over by the lower class? I just dont think this area will go down in the next twenty or so years. I am like a lot of people in ne jaxn. We are professionals that work in the hospitals and law firms in the city. Our kids go to school at prep and ja, and we go to church here. We really dont care for madison or rankin county where you have alot of people without deep roots in the area. Most think they are rich bc they make 100k per year without a damn dime in the bank but they have a big cookie cutter new house. If you want to see generational wealth, look in eastover and not in some five year development in madison cty. We are all doing fine in ne jaxn, and we plan on keeping it that way for years.

@11:55, I do believe that's the first time anyone has called me an "angry black dude" (a literal impossibility in my case).

I would find your comment comical had you ended your stupidity there. But "hatin on white people?" You're an idiot.

My comments provided you with a list of factually-accurate, race-neutral reasons why Miss Daisy needs to go.

Contrast her performance with the council's other white member--Quentin Whitwell. While Quentin may not be as effective as his predecessor (or his predecessor's predecessor), he has worked during his term. He attends regular meetings and work sessions, missing only when required by his employment. During the meetings, he contributes substantively to the debate. It is obvious that he devotes much time and effort outside of meetings. I don't agree with every position he takes, but he has earned another term on the council.

On the other hand, Margaret Barrett Simon has done nothing, contributes nothing, and won't even show up for work.

You see, dummy, it's not about race. It's about performance.

Re-drawing the district lines is an extreme remedy to shed dead weight. Like 9:19, I would like to see a less drastic cure. However, Jackson is in dire straights. It is in this condition because of these ineffective senior citizens that occupy positions in city government, and just won't go away. They have killed Jackson and must be eradicated.

By any means necessary.

KF, you do know that Jackson could have applied for money to repair the water/sewer system when federal monies were to be had and didn't, right?

That's where the story is.

And, yes, there has been a problem with water/sewer a very long time...at least since the late 60's. The Pearl River flood shouldn't have been nearly so devastating as it was.

Those of you in Madison and Rankin shouldn't be so smug. Your developers weren't required to put in your systems up to last either. They will fail much sooner than Jackson's have begun to fail and your system will not be as easy to patch.

Shadowfax said...

@9:31, I just couldn't resist. After being called "an angry black dude," it seemed appropriate to quote Brother Malcolm.

@Shadowfax, I'm willing to give you a pass for not being hip enough to recognize the large fellow in that photo. That is Suge Knight. I adopted that photo after jokingly suggesting that Jackson needed a chief of police with Suge's problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.

With regard to the identity of the petrified wood I referenced, there have actually been a string of them. Current city council members who fall into this category include Miss Daisy, Frank Tillman and Frank Bluntson (though Mr. Bluntson should get a point or two for showing up to work). The only useful function these folks could serve is welcoming me to wal-mart and checking my receipt when I leave.

You can also add King Harvey, his Campus Cop and Eric "Biggie" Wall to the list.

Note that when I derisively call someone in government a "senior citizen," I don't necessarily use 65 as a hard cutoff.

Who cares?

Seriously, other than the commenters on this board who argue about Jackson for the sake of having something to argue about, who cares?

It's beyond saving. The "new tax base" will pay about a fifth of what the departing tax base paid. I don't know what one-fifth as good as "sewage flooding the streets" is, and I really don't care to find out.

But whatever the end result, it will be a third-world country run by a bunch of incompetent racists. And there is absolutely nothing anyone in the world can do to change that, period.

So move out or ride the Titanic to the bottom. Beyond that, what is left to say?

Really? Presidential Hills? Westland Plaza? Wow, those are such flourishing areas aren't they? How they been doing lately? Let me help you out with that. This was within the last week:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Jackson Police say Christopher Younger and Ronald Bailey, both age 26, turned themselves in today. Both are being charged with the murder of 17-year-old Marquillon Hawkins. He was shot twice on Abraham Lincoln Drive, in Presidential Hills, about 8:30 Tuesday evening.

Hawkins was found lying on the ground in the backyard of a home a few doors down from his house. Police say the teen was shot twice in the back.

Previous Story
17 year old shot and killed in Presidential Hills
Witnesses say they saw a car pull up, and an armed passenger exit the vehicle, and chase Hawkins down, shooting him. He died at UMMC.

Hawkins' family says the men arrested were from the area, and they had been telling neighbors they were planning to kill him.

"This is very upsetting" said Tiadra Hawkins, the victim's sister. "We weren't expecting anything like this to happen. But you know we always knew that something around the neighborhood was going on with my brother, but we never knew it was going to come this soon."

Jackson Police are investigating another shooting involving yet another teenager. That shooting occurred Tuesday night in south Jackson.

An 18-year-old was shot in the chest at 2615 Hillside Drive.

The shooting was called in shortly after eleven o'clock. The victim's injuries are life threatening.

That's just great! Look what Jackson has to look forward to! If it were not for the few decent people who still live here and refuse to let a bunch of murdering thugs take it over, it would already be much worse than it is. Be careful what you wish for....you just might get it!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
