Michael Guest advertises child rapist as captured when he is actually free.

Rankin-Madison District Attorney Michael Guest proudly displays his "Most Wanted" page on his website. First thing one sees on his website (and it is his website as he stuck his name in the domain address) is the "Most Wanted" section next to his picture, along with a "captured label" on at least one of the photos. 34 out of 42 photos on the page itself show the same moniker, leading one to think these guys are locked up and we are all safe from these criminals.

However, these labels are somewhat misleading. One person listed as "captured", Kalvin Morrow, is a child rapist currently loose on the streets. Mr. Morrow raped a twelve-year old girl nearly five years ago. He was twenty-six years old at the time. He was indicted on May 17, 2007, for statutory rape. Mr. Morrow sat in jail for a long time before he finally posted bail on June 2, 2009.

Mr. Morrow entered a guilty plea on January 8, 2010, for Statutory Rape in an arrangement with the court and prosecution. He admitted to "having sexual intercourse with a child who is under the age of fourteen." Mr. Morrow received a twenty year sentence with twenty years suspended and supervised probation for five years. He is also enrolled in the sex offender registry. Registry

JJ is not questioning the prosecution of Mr. Morrow. He is obviously a sick and depraved man who should be in jail for a long time. However, a good prosecutor somehow obtains convictions even when dealt a bad hand. Mr. Morrow was indicted by the previous district attorney's office. The mother of the victim made it clear she was not going to let her child go through the ordeal of a trial and would not let her testify. The victim had made significant progress in her recovery and the mother did not want to impair it in any way possible, which is understandable. The prosecutor thus was faced with the dilemma of wanting to put this scumbag behind bars but unfortunately had a very weak case without a victim. The female prosecutor somehow obtained a guilty plea from the defendant and could at least label him as a sex offender for the rest of his life. Several prosecutors I spoke to said she had no choice and that was the only option available to her. If anything, she is to be commended for saving a case that probably would have failed if it had gone to trial. Copy of file

It is one thing to prosecute a sex offender, it is another to advertise Kalvin Morrow as "captured" when he is actually free. Mr. Guest has a responsibility, no, an obligation, to the public to tell the truth on his website. Such advertisements are misleading and an insult to the public. It is true Mr. Morrow was captured at one time. However, the average person who reads that page thinks this child rapist is locked up in jail when he is actually free and living among us. Mr. Guest will be better served if he posts something useful such as a convicted sex offenders page on his website instead of juvenile promotions such as his "most wanted". What we want from our leaders is the truth about crime, not false advertising. Mr. Guest should remove Mr. Morrow from his "Most Wanted" list.

He needs to capture those eyebrows. Seriously.

Ouch. I'm sure the residents of North Brandon Estates will be interested in this one.

KF, this is obviously a continuation of your obsession with Michael Guest and some sort of personal shot at him. One could just as easily argue that this scumbag was captured, although he has been released by the courts under certain conditions. I could agree with your argument, but I could just as easily agree that Guest's terminalogy was appropriate too. Admit it - you just don't like Guest and will utilize anything you can to take a shot at him.

Hello Mr. Guest!

Reads to me that KF is questioning the "misleading" grandstanding Mr. Guest employs on his own website. If that is alright with you 2:13PM, don't ever complain about truth or transparency. This would be strike two of Mr. Guest demonstrating somewhat poor judgement in presenting all the facts. Just look back to his collections business.

Obsession? Obsession? Allow me to retort.

1. No prosecution of the Evans case. Largest real estate fraud in Mississippi ever and $40 million of it took place in Madison County.

2. Collection business

3. Nothing been done about Soto who allegedly committed perjury in Madison County.

4. Then there is the case in Rankin where he paraded the little girl who was paralyzed by a drunk driver. She got 50 years. He got in front of the cameras and bragged about it. Really burned me up. Especially when his office plea bargained Alford, who killed someone drunk driving and only has to serve six years in jail.

yeah, but aside from that, what's wrong with the guy? ;-)

Seriously, he's not as bad as the guy he replaced, who collected disability because he was unable to work right up until the day he started as DA, then he was miraculously fit to work the day that check started coming.

I think the context in which the word "Captured" is used is appropriate (and accurate) on this page of the DA's website.

Morrow was a fugitive because he failed to surrender when indicted/failed to appear. This is what landed him on the DA's Most Wanted list. When law enforcement captured him, his status changed to "Captured."

This is the same procedure the FBI and other federal agencies use when they apprehend someone on their Most Wanted lists. Fugitive vs. Captured doesn't refer to the ultimate resolution of the case.

If the argument is that the website should be updated because the case is over, that may be a legitimate point. However, I didn't find this to be misleading at all.

Captured is fine until the point the guy is released. Captured implies the guy is NOT out and about.

I agree with Crowley. Issue with me is "Captured" credit should go to the Police, not the prosecutor. Captured/Prosecuted/Jailed or in this case Captured/Prosecuted/Set Free should be Mr. Guest's headline. More truthful.

Kingfish said...

Does the U.S. Attorney have "captured" on his website? I wasn't aware prosecutors were in the apprehension business. Just checked,. No he doesn't.

As for David Clark, you will get no argument from me about him.

Captured does not mean incarcerated. Straining at a knat?

Anonymous said...

I believe the DA's office would be better served by providing the prosecution status - "Convicted!" perhaps. The police, marshals and other law enforcement should get the credit for the capture.

KaptKangaroo said...

Captured implies only one thing, they have apprehended a person who is presumed innocent.

I don't think the use of the word "captured" is incorrect. In the wrong place, maybe. If this case is closed, and a plea entered, it should not be on the website. If it is overlooked, someone needs to notify the DA's office. If it is intentional, it might lead to question someone's character.

Kaptain, or one who is found guilty.

KaptKangaroo said...

Yes, 7:10PM, apparently the meaning of "Captured" implied by the website means someone "CAPTURED" and "found guilty, sentenced to 20 years, suspended, and released free on 5 years probation while registering for life as a sex offender."

Thank you. Good point.

My only gripe is that there are plenty of fugitives to put in the places of the "captured". If they are captured, they are not wanted any more. Put up the ones wanted. The DA doesn't need to convince us that he is taking care of crime.

KaptKangaroo said...

My gripe is the DA should pay attention to his public duties and not his public persona or personal interests that profit from his public position. He does a fine job hogging the airwaves when a major crime occurs. Remember the Klansman that was murdered in Rankin? Sheriff initially was in front of the press, but Guest showed up and took over...primping to the public. The issue is the grandstanding folks. If he is doing a good job, great. I think he does. But if he is taking credit for things that are "spun", he would do himself a great deal of good and hire a PR guy. He is doing a pretty good job with the size of the population of the two counties. What he is doing that is out of the public eye, however, is starting to look very self-serving and mish-mash of a message. I don't admonish him for it, I would rather see him do better. He is young, has a promising political career, and not sure who is advising him. He would do better to get someone to help him to straighten out all the issues coming to light in advance of future public service. ;)

I don't think it's proper for any prosecutor to have a most wanted list...prosecutors are in a position to do justice, which may mean not pursuing charges in a given case. Having a most wanted list presumes that prosecution will follow arrest, which is not always the case. Let the cops do the capturing.

Anonymous said...

Great point, what if he decides to put up most wanted for "Contempt of Court" (I actually saw an FTA in that list), I wonder if he has power beyond criminal to post civil matters. I bet he does. There is NO rule. I bet it could be "spun" even if it's civil. Where is the line drawn? In this case there is no line, much like the business dealings. Its all legal shmeagle, and we are again playing sheepish.

Guest is a lot better than the man he replaced. I voted for him last time, and I would again if the election was today.

What about the continued crime in the "safe" Fondren area? Another business was broken into just this week. The thugs and drug dealers a block away just needed some new sunglasses. No big deal.

I'm doing Guest a favor, believe it or not. Its no secret he wants to run for higher office one day. Better to bring this stuff up now, then have an opponent do it one day in a very sleazy fashion.

As to the website you referenced, if you run those names through MDOC, you will find that every one of those guys are just where the website says they are--prison.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
